An Interval in the Winterval

The first rule about Winterval Interval is that we do not mention the C word. The second rule about Winterval Interval is that we do deliberately mention the D word.

At Dead Positive we have an aversion to the conventional. We do not do forced positivity. No one loses their ‘fight’ against the illness which they have died from on our watch. Neither does anyone find their way into a coffin because they happened to ‘fall asleep’.

Convention says that at Christmas (the c word) we are allowed to publicly commemorate our dead people. At Christmas, it’s acceptable for hospices and charities to open their doors to hold space for those in their communities wishing to remember. Convention also says that whilst doing this we must tread lightly. We must gently allude to this ‘lighting up’ event. Treat it with verbal mittens. Dead Positive was founded on a commitment to compassionate boldness. Here we call a spade a spade. We use the d word. We welcome folk into our events with unbridled kindness. Assuring them that their person, the one who died, is also welcome.

We describe our dead as dead because that is the truth of their human state.

And so the Interval in our Winterval was one filled with honesty, laughter, tears, singing, mince pies and (as is also our custom) a disco ball.

Hands in the bucket if you’re with us for next time?
